Alonso Leads Opening Practice at Singapore Grand Prix

F1 Singapore

3-5 October will see the race starting at 13:00 BST on race day.

Live coverage provided on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sport.

FP1 Results Summary

Aston Martin's Spanish veteran was fastest in front of Scuderia star and Dutch ace in FP1 for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The British team's championship contenders Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris wrapped up the practice in mid-table positions.

Piastri was 0.217 seconds faster than his teammate.

Alonso was a slim margin in front of the Ferrari driver and over a quarter of a second faster than Verstappen.

The Italian squad's British icon was P4.

Weekend Outlook

It is not expected that the Silverstone-based team will be in the mix for the top spot.

Nonetheless, the squad are confident of a improved performance on a tight circuit that is better matched to their car, which excels when high levels of aerodynamic grip are required.

Double world title winner Fernando is also famous as a Marina Bay expert, and usually excels on the Marina Bay street track.

But he was likely operating with reduced weight or a higher engine mode than his opponents, or a combination, to set such a quick time.

Session Details

His team-mate Lance Stroll was almost two seconds off the pace in the lower order.

He had difficulties with his seat at the start and was also evaluating new components.

FP1 in Marina Bay is not indicative of later performance under lights as it is conducted in bright conditions in early evening, while qualifying and the grand prix are staged at night.

Championship Standings

The McLaren driver is ahead of Norris by a solid margin with remaining rounds to go entering the weekend in Singapore.

The Woking-based team are in position to secure the team title on Sunday.

Single possibility they can miss out in this race is if the Silver Arrows beat them by 31 points or Ferrari achieve that by thirty-five.

Competitor Outlook

The energy drink brand's team are hopeful of a strong result after Max's wins in the previous rounds leading into this weekend.

The team breathed a sigh when precipitation occurring before the session abated by the time the cars emerged on a track that had not been wet.

Motorsport adviser the Austrian stated before the session that they wanted a dry hour to make a comprehensive start on fine-tuning their car configuration for the event.
